The Pioneer Days Queen Competition is a highlight of the annual Pioneer Days Festival, celebrating young women who embody the values and spirit of our community’s pioneer heritage.
What Makes a Pioneer Queen?
Leadership, community service, academic achievement, and a deep appreciation for our local history and traditions.
Competition Format:
The Pioneer Queen competition is unique – it’s a fundraising-based pageant where candidates sell the festival’s “Big Ticket” raffle tickets. The high school senior who sells the most tickets is crowned Pioneer Days Queen, making it as much about community involvement as individual honors.

🌟 Queen’s Role
The Pioneer Days Queen serves as an ambassador for our community throughout the year, representing Kalida at various events and celebrations.

- Lead the grand Sunday parade (300+ units)
- Participate in festival ceremonies
- Help with prize drawings and events
- Represent Kalida at regional festivals
- Promote local history and traditions

📅 Competition Timeline
Ticket Sales Begin
High school seniors begin selling the festival’s “Big Ticket” raffle tickets throughout the community. This fundraising competition determines the Pioneer Days Queen.
Community Engagement
Candidates go door-to-door and visit local businesses to sell tickets, engaging residents in the festival excitement and building community connections.
Coronation Ceremony
At the Pioneer Park pavilion, the candidate who sold the most tickets is crowned Pioneer Days Queen in a celebratory ceremony attended by the community.
Grand Parade
The newly crowned queen leads the massive Sunday parade (300+ units) riding on a float or convertible, waving to crowds and representing Kalida with pride.
📚 A Rich History Since 1962
The Pioneer Days Queen competition began in 1962 when the Putnam County Pioneer Association handed over festival sponsorship to the Kalida Lions Club and Firemen’s Association. As part of the festival’s modernization, a Queen contest was introduced, and Agnes Erhart was crowned the very first Pioneer Days Queen.
🏛️ A Cherished Tradition
Since 1962, the local Union Bank has donated the Pioneer Queen’s crown every year – a tradition that symbolizes the community’s enduring support for this beloved event.
Notable Milestones:
- 1962: Agnes Erhart becomes the first Pioneer Days Queen
- 1972: Alice Kerner honored as “Centennial Queen” during the 100th anniversary of Pioneer Days
- 2022: Celebrated 150th anniversary as Ohio’s oldest festival
- Present: Over 60 Pioneer Queens crowned since the tradition began
